Ricky Keil: Mr. Townsend is correct as to the shippers instructions. The shipper could also specify the junction points and at Omaha/Council Bluffs there was (and is) a difference in how the revenue is divided amongst the participating carriers. Other than the IC/CN which has their own bridge across the Missouri the only option is the UP bridge. And unless the UP is in route the UP assess a per car charge. So the car would probably be routed CNW-Council Bluffs-UP although it may move via Fremont for "carriers convenience" but the revenue division would be CBlfs. If the CBQ had it's choice it would prefer CBlfs as well as the Q could move the car west via Pacific Jct. At Denver the question is which line serves the receiver and is it "open" to reciprocal switching. Railroads divided revenue amongst themselves and these agreements were confidential. When I was in the Q Sales Department I dealt with the auto companies and other firms and when we tried to figure out our assigned car requirements we needed to know how much CBQ revenue would be generated for each assignment. The CBQ revenue division was a key number and the Divisions folks in Chicago (part of the Rate Department) would give me the divisions verbally only and with instructions that this was confidential information. While I have a general understanding of routing rules, I still have some questions concerning how freight was interchanged between specific railroads.
I am trying to figure out how things were handled in the Omaha area. It seems pretty easy for eastern railroads and midwestern/western railroads meeting at Chicago or St Louis. Omaha and Kansas City starts getting a great deal of overlap across the states
of Iowa and Missouri and that is where my confusion lies.
For example, if a car originated in eastern Iowa on the C&NW bound for Denver, would it stay on C&NW until someplace like Omaha then handed off to another railroad or done closer to the origin if the railroad had a route to Denver? Would C&NW favor UP over
CB&Q or would it depend on what railroad the final destination was located?
Thanks
