Routing was at the discretion of the shipper. They could specify any route they wanted. The local agent likely suggested a route, and it was to the advantage of each railroad to maximize the routing over its own line. So in the absence of instructions from the shipper to the contrary, the C&NW agent likely would send the load as far west as he could over the C&NW. In addition, railroads often had "friendly" and "unfriendly" connections, so the might favor a routing over a friendly road rather than an unfriendly one. I think the UP and C&NW were friendly, so the C&NW's preferred routing might have been C&NW to Omaha, then UP to Denver. But maybe a shipper had had a bad experience with the UP in the past and specified that the UP was to be avoided. Then it might go CB&Q from Omaha to Denver. Or the shipper might have specified an early hand off to the Rock Island then RI all the way to Denver.

All
While I have a general understanding of routing rules, I still have some questions concerning how freight was interchanged between specific railroads.
I am trying to figure out how things were handled in the Omaha area. It seems pretty easy for eastern railroads and midwestern/western railroads meeting at Chicago or St Louis. Omaha and Kansas City starts getting a great deal of overlap across the states
of Iowa and Missouri and that is where my confusion lies.
For example, if a car originated in eastern Iowa on the C&NW bound for Denver, would it stay on C&NW until someplace like Omaha then handed off to another railroad or done closer to the origin if the railroad had a route to Denver? Would C&NW favor UP over
CB&Q or would it depend on what railroad the final destination was located?
Thanks
