BLI has announced that they intend to release CB&Q F3 ABBA set 116ABCD
as an AB set and as additional A and B unit, hopefully by the end of
the year. They are taking preorders now. The problem with their plan
is that CB&Q road numbers 116-121 were the early Phase II versions of
the F3 with raised fan shrouds and without Mars lights, and the BLI
model has Mars lights. I brought this error to their attention today.
They have three options, as I see it. They can ignore the prototype
information and issue another foobie, they can change the road number
to 160 or 161, or they can retool the shell without the Mars light.
All three options have drawbacks. A foobie may reduce sales, Walthers
P2K has already issued 160 ABC models, and retooling is expensive. I
don’t know what they will do, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they
elect to ignore the prototype error, so /caveat emptor/!
