It is my understanding that the "Comet" name was applied to a special section of the"Alaskan", the secondary NP transcontinental train. (This train was ultimately replaced by the "Mainstreeter".)  The whole purpose of the Comet was to deliver Pullmans to the National Park Gateways at Billings and Livingston, and as such was a seasonal operation, dependent on the opening and closing dates of Yellowstone Park.  In this context it is similar to the Burlington's seasonal "Buffalo Bill" that delivered Summer tourist traffic to Cody from Denver.  There was no eastbound equivalent as cars were simply added  to the eastbound NCL or Alaskan, which prior to the Depression, usually ran in several sections daily.   This operation was documented mostly in the Official Guides of that era.  Jim Sandrin
