Hol - Thanks for putting me back on the right track..... (again!).  I found another image of Car 31 that I'm attaching.  It, too, would've been taken by Fred Lehmann at the Aurora Shops and is dated April 3, 1942.  The images were taken much later than I had thought.  Plus, they would not be glass plate, but film negatives, probably from the sharp detail 4x5 inch or even larger as from using a view camera. Regardless, the interior views are technically first class for their era. I had seen images of the Mendota fan trip you mention, but didn't realize that the rear end obs would shortly become Car 31. Appreciate your filling-in the details on Car 31. Very interesting, indeed - Louis

Louis:

The car was built as CB&Q 206 (along with sister 205) by Barney & Smith in May 1911 as parlor-lounge-observation cars for Chicago-Twin Cities service.  The 205 was retired on June 28, 1941, and its body used atsa building at Ottumwa, Iowa.  The 206 was converted in March 1942 into air brake instruction car 31, numbered above 1929 dynamometer car 30.  The photos were taken by company photographer Fred Lehmann at the Aurora shops upon completion of the conversion.  Car 31 was retired on Nov. 27, 1951, and scrapped at Eola.

Cars 205-206 were the last open platform observation cars built for the Q.  Among the last revenue use of the 206 was on a railfan trip out of Chicago on June 15, 1941, two views of which are attached.

Hudson - Thanks for sharing these wonderful old photographs. In the interior images, look closely and you'll see that the air brake stands are mounted on casters to where they can pivot outwards for instruction, then be pushed aside to be out-of-the-way. Can anyone ID the brake systems? These are absolutely gorgeous glass plate images taken by a very technically competent photographer. I don't recognize the background skyline in the car broadside image, but it's most likely Chicago.

These images would have to date to when the Q was retiring its fleet of wood sided passengers cars for all-steel heavyweight cars. Thus, this outside vestibule car was converted into an instruction car.  What luxury the engine crews enjoyed while taking air brake instruction in such a fancy setting. I imagine that the pressurized air needed came from a track side location such as at a large depot or roundhouse. Does anyone know what car this originally was and any details on it? - Louis
