GT is Galesburg, the location repacking was done. 5.42 is the repack date. Since the repack date is earlier than the build date, you may have some of the numbers
wrong.
New cars had both NEW 4.45 and BUILT 4.45 (or whatever the build date is. After the first reweigh, the NEW 4.45 is painted over and the reweigh date is stenciled
on the car where the new date was previously located. The build date remains the same. Reweigh and repack dates are changed according to car regulations, which vary for different types of cars and different time periods. Tony Thompson covers this information
in his Southern Pacific blog, and you can Google Tony Thompson to find it, then enter reweigh or repack in the search field.
Yes, prototype modeling is an incurable disease, but it’s not fatal.

Despite a steady increase in my personal happiness this might finally lead into a total rivet count now, sorry about that in advance!
After looking over some pictures that Mr. Moyer sent me (thank you, Sir!) I would say that a CB&Q car in the mid 1940's should have had a Burlington Route herald with a black background.
Can you confirm that also for the 300 C&S hoppers? I would say that the black background was dropped some day prior to 1945. A pic of HT-5B #189011 built in April 1945 shows the newer herald without black base.
Since I model 1946 that would mean that I
To solve that secret I need one more puzzle piece. Why would a railroad stamp a car with "NEW 4.45" when there is a "BUILT 4.45" on the same car side. Does that mean that the car was not yet overhauled or repainted? In an other picture I read "GT 5.42" instead
of "NEW" (Black based herald still). That car was shopped at "GT" (Where's that, by the way?) Maybe you could shed some light into this.
I don't know why but I really enjoy a correctly lettered car much better. Is that a disease?
Thanks for your reactions!
