[Edited Message Follows] The red & white Mars light between the numberboards has NOTHING to do with the train 'Class' or schedule. The 1967 CCOR rulebook says... Rule 17 (in part) The headlight must be displayed burning bright to the front of every train by day and by night. Rule 17c On engines so equipped, oscillating white headlight must be displayed approaching and passing over public crossings and through cities and towns by night or during foggy or stormy weather. It must be extinguished when the headlight is dimmed or extinguished. Oscillating white light should be used in a stationary position as substitute headlight in case of failure of the headlight. Speaking from personal experience, It was not uncommon for engineers to forget the oscillating or stationary white Mars light was on at daybreak or after having used it in daytime stormy weather. Note that the rule only states when the Mars light MUST be used. It does not prohibit its use at other times at engineer's discretion.
