Here is a shot of C&S 880 leading a southbound on the Joint Line at Littleton, Colorado in 1971.  Note that while the sun is not quite setting, the upper white Mars light is lit.  While it was usually up to the engineer's discretion as to when to use the signal light, in this case the frequent grade crossings south of Denver probably had an influence.   Just an example for your consideration.
