Aside from the cleaner styling one consideration might have been the uncoupling gear was protected behind the pilot on the "enclosed" pilot as compared to it being out front and exposed on the "open" type.  The coupler being behind the clamshell doors also was supposed to keep anything hit from becoming entangled in it.  All Q F units had the enclosed pilots except the FTs and F2 units which had the open style (and three or four digit small side mounted numberboards).
