Pete - Your "Excellence In Flagging" article inspired me to submit an article of my own to Dave Lotz for use in an upcoming issue of the Zephyr.  Dave has accepted the article and images, so look for the article in a future issue.  Hint, it involves an early 1960s event that occurred at the 14th Street Coach Yard in Chicago. I'm also presenting working in conjunction with Earl Currie on a feature article that will appear in a future Bulletin. Hint, it involves the Chicago Division during the early 1960s.  I really enjoyed your "Excellence In Flagging" that puts the reader right along side you up in the cab and down on the cinders..... I look forward to your upcoming "Tales of the Rails" articles. I encourage other members to record their Q memories and share them with Dave for possible use in the Zephyr and Bulletin. Best Regards - Louis

Doug H...You asked re whether as a Wymore Division Brakeman did I have to protect jobs on other divisions...

At Lincoln there were three extra boards...Wymore, Lincoln and Omaha.   There was also  a Wymore board at Wymore which protected the jobs that worked out of Wymore.

At Lincoln it seemed that when one division was "out of men" they would use a brakeman off one of the other boards..I don't think that there was any penalty for being used off some other board.  I don't recall being used off the Wymore board on either of the other boards, but in the two summers before when I worked off the Lincoln Board I was used on the Wymore Division trains a couple of times.

In the Summer of 58 as the "junior" man on the board i was "forced" on the Wymore local early on and hence was not subject to being used off the Wymore board or any other board for that matter...It was while I was working on the Wymore local that I bid on the Fairmont-Hildreth job and got it, hence I spent the rest of the Summer  July 18th-Sept 8th on that job.

Dave Lotz has several more of my "Tales of the Rails" which will appear over the next year or two in the Zephys and Bulletins..The production schedule is up; to Dave.. He has all the manuscripts and will publish according to his schedule.

Pete

Enjoyed it as well.‎ Looking forward to more. Makes me appreciate what pre-CTC mainline was like. Although we had some dark I don’t ever remember REALLY flagging. Do you, Leo? Although we had to (were supposed to, anyway) know all the arcane rules, I think it was a use-it-or-lose-it skill set.

You were Wymore Div, but worked out of Lincoln? Did you have to protect both?

Thanks Leo..You will recall you that you "admonished" me a year or so ago to write some of my "stuff"..well I have an almost inexhaustable supply of material that I've wrtitten over the years and Dave has 3-4 more drafts of material so we're only limited by what publication  volume limits are in place...Dave's editing skills along with his addition of maps and photos do, indeed, make the stories "come alive" and set the context for the tale.

There is more to come whenever editor Dave decides to use it.

Pete,

Thanks for writing your Excellence in Flagging" article in the current Bulletin. I really enjoyed it. It's written to finest standards of the old Railroad Magazine articles, except better because of the including maps and photos.

Leo
Ps-Dave you were right, I did really enjoy Petes article.
