The CB &Q 13818 was built in the Aurora,IL shops in December 1918. It was last in service at East St. Louis and was sent to Eola in 1974 and rather than going to the reclamation plant, it was saved and donated to the Kendall County Historical Society that year. It is a class NE 9 of 30' length. On the inside it is tight and dry with paperwork in the Conductors desk, train orders from the Fox River branch, kerosene hand lanterns, a Flagging bag, etc. The interior is still in Q hunk car gray and looks pretty much like it did when in service.

Last year a group of BRHS members spent a day sweeping, scrubbing, washing windows etc to make the depot and waycar presentable and then manned them the following two days welcoming visitors and explaining their history.

This year we just need volunteers to step forward to help us man these CBQ pieces and show hundreds of people what they were about.

We staff these artifacts because the Kendall County Historical Society is a volunteer organization that needs our help and expertise to explain the Q, the equipment and our society. The KCHS does not get a dime from any government entity. They survive on fund raisers like this fall festival.

I would encourage BRHS members to first step forward and help at month end. Then I'd love to see an ad hoc fund raising committee formed to raise money for the restoration of the waycar siding, windows, doors and repainting same. The BRHS board of directors will be glad to guide the group but we are fully occupied with numerous BRHS activities.

The BRHS will be staffing the Burlington waycar and original Plano, Illinois, depot at the Kendall County Historical Society Fall Festival on Saturday, September 29, and Sunday, September 30. The festival is held at Lyon Farm located at 7935 Rte 71 between Oswego and Yorkville, Illinois. We will have the company store on hand as well as membership info.
We are looking for 5 volunteers for each of three, two hour shifts from 10AM-4PM on those two days. The more members who help the more time each of us will have to enjoy the rest of the festival's events. If you can only help for a couple hours that will be great.
