I will confirm that lighting makes a huge difference. I want to have some C&S gons hauling limestone from the quarry at Ingleside in northern Colorado. I went to the actual quarry, which still is in operation and obtained some of the limestone, which was blinding white under the sun in the quarry. In the layout room it is a muddy pink. Big disappointment. Richard Townsend

Close is better then not knowing at all. And the different lights we use on layouts can change the colors from outdoor lighting
No two boxcars even painted one right after the other will age the same so color is a mater of the viewers interpretation
