The attached is obviously a model, but it better illustrates what the end of an EMD F-unit looks like. In the picture I posted yesterday, you can clearly see the same ribs (both sides of the passageway) and electrical box on the right (and similar on the left). EVERY F-unit was like this.

I can see some sort of "thing" on the side of the diaphragm I am describing.  It sort of looks like a class-light housing, though that would not be what it was.  That is why I think there IS a diaphragm (or "canvas cover").  If you look at the shadow in the void between the A and B, you will see that it doesn't repeat for the B-B connection.  There IS no shadow.  Thus no void.

I believe there were drawbars between the A and B's.  And couplers between the B's.  This was not necessary, as GN had 4 unit sets of FT's both with and without such couplers.  But I am trying to account both for the much wider gap and the diaphragm/canvas cover.
