The author replied back to me telling me that the Newberry had responded to her initial request. Now we know where it came from!

She had a few further queations based on what she received from Glen.

"I have received some information via The Newberry Library and am grateful for anything you may be able to add. I am also looking for how often the trains ran on the line from Cicero, Illinois to Omaha, Nebraska, in 1906 - 1908 and how long the stops for water, fuel, change of personnel, and the like, may have taken. Approximations are great. I understand much of this will be difficult to pin down.

Next I will be researching towns along the line that may have had hobo jungles as well as farms where my characters may have found work. It is a grand adventure!"

I will collect all the information and forward it to her. Glen, would you like to be credited for the research you did?

Thanks!

Glen, Group,

If you have access to the Newberry, do you know if they have any employee timetables for 1906 that would cover the divisions from Chicago (Cicero) to I believe the author was going to Omaha?

If they do, I believe that would help show where there were water stops.

The only other bit of information the author would need to know or work with is the type/size of locomotive, type/size of train and how she(?) portrays the engine crew.... that would also determine when/where an engine would need to stop for water.

Bryan:

I got a similar request from the Newberry Library, who had been contacted by this author.  I gave the Newberry a list of terminals where crews would have changed, plus some other locations where trains might have hypothetically taken on addition fuel or water, but I am not an expert, so if anyone else cares to share specific information on these types of stops, then I will forward it on to the author.

All,

I received a request from an author asking about the locations of water stops along the Q between Cicero, IL, and Omaha, NE, in 1906. They are writing an historical fiction novel on hobos. I'm sure the information would be listed in an Employee Time Table, but the ones that I have are from a much later period. Can anyone help out?

Thanks!

Bryan J. Howell
