MU connections are cables and hoses to carry commands for the electrical and air systems from one unit to another.  That's how one engineer can control any number of trailing engines from one control stand.  In the early days, some units were built with no MU connections on the front nose, on the assumption that the front of the unit would "always" be leading.  Subsequent experience showed a need for any given unit to be able to be in the middle of a consist, so modifications were made accordingly.

What were the nose MU connections for?   In a related question can you
connect units of different manufacturers?  Early photos show strings of
Alco or EMD while modern photos show EMD and GE connected. I guess my
real question is How does MU work in the beginning and now?
