May I suggest checking out Q Connection's Flint Hills ballast at www.QConnection.biz?  Our N scale ballast was chosen for Model Railroader's N scale project layout recently and we've recevied many comments on how well it matches the Q's mainline ballast.

Did the Q use one main type of ballast on all of their mainlines, or would it have varied by region? Same for yards. I'm trying to determine which colors to use on my Q n-scale layout.
