Hol, A while ago, I found a photo of another E-7 unit that had the SSS treatment. I'm away from my photos, but I'll see if I can't find it and post the number.

As noted with two photos of the unit appearing in Burlington Bulletin No. 10, "This E7 -- the 9921B -- received its unusual paint scheme quite intentionally in late 1948 to test the appearance of 'shadow-line' imitation
fluting on an E-unit. The experimental scheme also eliminated the upper and lower red stripes from the sides of the unit." The second photo shown was taken on Dec. 31, 1950, and the caption notes, "Soon after, 9921B was repainted conventionally."
So yes, it was the only unit to wear "fluting" and it was not real stainless steel fluting but painted shadow-lining.

Sent: Thursday, January 4, 2018 9:13 AM To: CBQ@yahoogroups.com Subject: [CBQ] E7's I have several photos of the Q's E7's including 9921 which has fluting on the sides. Is this the only E7 that had fluting applied to the sides or are there any other E7's with fluting?
If it was unique to 9921 only, does anyone know why it was done and was it ever removed?
Would be an interesting model to do in HO or O.
