When trying to determine Railway Post Office Service you need to find "Schedule of Mail Routes" or "General Scheme" these were issued by the Postal Transportation Service of the United States Post Office. Not the USPS we know today. These were issued by states. I have Illinois and Iowa put out Feb 1 1952 (see Attachment) There are pages of notes 49 and 53 did not have working clerks on Sunday it was all closed pouch No RPO on 44-45 on Sundays 52 no clerks on Sunday only closed pouch 44 no RPO on Sunday 54 no RPO on Monday Course this only shows for Illinois and the cars ran thru to St. Paul and or Minneapolis but you would need the book for Wisconsin to show the stops and or pickups in that state. CP stands for Closed Pouch Locked up mail bags The other is SR or Star Route which was the old style of truck route stopping at every Post Office along the route. By the mid-50's the HPO or Highway Post Office was put on where a large bus type vehicle would drive from end to end with clerks on board sorting the mail just like on the RPO it probably replaced. Some 60 years ago now I use to ride with my Dad when he would catch a relief job on the Star Route truck from White Pigeon to Kalamazoo Mich. We would top at all the small Post Offices along the way north and then meet up with the HPO in WP on the way home that drove Route 12 from Chicago to Detroit. Also I believe in the day time that the RPO ran on 25 westbound when it ran solo and eastbound on 24. My two cents.
