Thread-topic: [CBQ] Alignment Charts in BB#53 Addendum

Thanks for the links. It should be pretty easy to make up something that looks like chat. I may experiment with art sand, since it’s fine and comes in a variety of colors. It’s probably much less expensive than commercial ballast from the usual sources, and I have a lot of track to ballast.

Nelson:

I agree with the choice of N-scale material to represent chat ballast in HO.  The chat piles I remember from my days in Missouri (worked in the Old Lead Belt 1980-1982) consisted of mostly pebble sized material.

Both of these photos show chat ballast:

Thanks, I Googled Chatt without the s and came up empty. The photo of the OK pile shows a light gray overall color, so I’ll use that as a starting point and mix in some lighter and darker material. I have a bag of Flint Hills ballast HO ballast, but the darkest pieces seem a little too dark. The N scale ballast doesn’t show as much contrast in the online photograph on Q connection, so I may try that option. I suspect the N scale rock size is closer to prototype rock size.

This may help:

KCS and Frisco made extensive use of chat ballast.

The alignment chart for MP 205-206 (from the Bridge to Main Street in Burlington) list three ballast types over the years, chatts 1943, L. S. 1957, and slag 1960. I assume L. S. is limestone, and I know what slag ballast looks like, but what is chatts, and what does it look like? I ask Steve Holding, and he thinks it’s unscreened crushed limestone, but if that’s true, why would the alignment chart list chatts in 1943 and L.S. in 1957 if they’re the same thing?
