Steve: Just one clarification to your post: the problem with Wall Street is its focus on the next quarter, rather than the longer term health and development of the business. I observe this issue applies to all businesses, not just to railroads. My personal observations relate to the petroleum industry, but cursory review suggests there is a significant difference between investors (think Berkshire Hathaway) and financial engineers (think Carl Ichan, or any number of hedge funds). More is the pity. Shorter term profits do not necessarily translate to longer term optimization of true assets' potential. The consequences are significant, ultimately resulting in wastage of resource potential, and of existing capital assets. Supposedly, the benefits are transfers of capital to more lucrative opportunities. This typically results in over-pricing of so-called growth stocks, which does not necessarily benefit the business so much as the shareholders who are sufficiently nimble. Believe it or not, I am still a Capitalist, since this system is observably more efficient than Socialism (think Venezuela, Cuba, etc.).
