Leo - OK, thanks. Still worth a phone call to the existing union headquarters to see what records they may or may not have concerning your dad. With genealogical research, never hurts to talk and ask questions. The answer is there somewhere waiting...... Good Luck - Louis

Thanks for the lead Louis. Pension check came from railroad retirement. Unions didn't have pensions like Teamsters or UAW.

After I sent the email the thought crossed my mind that sometime between the early 20s and the late 40s the Aurora division switch men voted out BRT,SUNA in and then out again. But that wouldn't explain the SUNA stuff in the 60s.

Leo - Have you tried searching his pension record(s) to see what organization was sending his pension checks?  Then, back track. If his union membership records still exist at UTU headquarters or were donated to some archive, then that might explain matters. Also, his newspaper obituary might mention membership(s). You might find something useful. Best Regards - Louis

I have a question that has now troubled me for some time since beginning research in the union files several years, recent reading has only caused me more confusion.
Maybe one of you can shed some light on this subject.

Bear with me as a lay the groundwork and background for the question.

My grandfather was a Q switchman from 1917-1954/55 at Aurora/Eola. Prior to that he was in train service from about 1912. In the BRT lodge files of the early 20s is a petition signed by several switchman members of the lodge concerning a local manning issue.
Among those signatures is my grandfather,E.B. Smith and Leo Boirsdorf who I remember from childhood. At that time they are members of the Aurora BRT lodge and working as switchman.

All thru the local files starting in the 50s and 60s are correspondence, claim, etc from the BRT switchmens grievance committee on various matters and on BRT stationary. They
Had a separate greivance committee and local chairman but were members of the combined Aurora switchman and trainman lodge. The Condrs. We're members of O.R.C.

In 1969 the BRT,ORC,SUNA(switchman union of North America) and the firemans union
Combined to form UTU.

Now here's where the confusion comes in. My grandfather received the SUNA newspaper and I read it every time I was visiting. When he died in 1964 there was a huge floral arrangement with the large S. it's my understanding that a person couldn't be a member of both organizations,I can't find a single piece of paper or reference to SUNA in any of the thousands of documents I've gone through.
And I assure you my frugal grandfather wouldn't maintain dual memberships even if he could.

I am stumped.

Leo
