Here are the standard sizes of the block Gothic lettering used on cars painted in Chinese red, or refrigerator cars of the same era. Burlington: the "B" is 30-inches tall, the other letters are scaled proportionally CB&Q, C&S, RBBQ, BURLINGTON REFRIGERATOR EXPRESS ETC: 9-inches HYDRAULIC CUSHIONING, CUSHION UNDERFRAME, REFRIGERATOR: 9-inches Car Numbers on sides, WAY OF THE ZEPHYRS/EVERYWHERE WEST slogans: 7-inches Mechanical information, instructions on doors, New..., Return to... :3-inches Dimensional info on doors and car sides, Built location, date : 2-inches End of car reporting marks and numbers: 4-inches End of car mechanical info: 2.5-inches This obviously covers more than the XM-4 grain cars but with few exceptions this will allow you to letter most any car through the mid to late 1960s. The most notable variation would be when cars were repainted in the late 1960s ( and built-new jumbo covered hoppers) that used 9-inch numbers , the same size as the reporting marks. The numbers on Red and gray diesels were 12-inches tall with Ownership lettering ( C&S, FW&D) 4-inches tall. Jim Sandrin __._,_.___ Posted by: jamessandrin@yahoo.com __,_._,___ |
