C&S SD40's had the hand brake on the rear, later models had them on the short nose "normally" on the left side.  A lot if not most models the hand brake only worked on the rear truck.   Later models with the brake up front, it only works on the front truck. Quicker ? and easier for the engine crew to set the brake (maybe?)./

All,

Perhaps some one could shed some light on this subject, I'm going to paint some C&S SD40'S and I noticed they have a stand brake on the long hood. So my question is why? What benefits does having the brake on the rear like that vs the nose on a standard cab engine?

On the prototype I understand why because the lack of space on a North American cab.
