Good question.

GP7s were at the rear of the long hood. E8/9s were at the rear of the engine room. I would be speculating on other EMD models without looking at pics.

Perhaps some one could shed some light on this subject, I'm going to paint some C&S SD40'S and I noticed they have a stand brake on the long hood. So my question is why? What benefits does having the brake on the rear like that vs the nose on a standard cab engine?

On the prototype I understand why because the lack of space on a North American cab.
