You got it  just right Glen.....The bracket ALWAYS indicates that there is a track between the track governed by the signal and the signal itself

There have been several other replies regarding this signal.  Here is some specific information on it's location.

It is shown on the North LaCrosse CB&Q station map.  It is located at MP 299.95, 331' west of the Milwaukee WB Main track at Grand Crossing, and is a signal for eastward trains on the main used by CB&Q passenger trains to get from North LaCrosse station to the east side main after 1940.  The map shows two turnouts from this main track to the Milwaukee yard, one on either side of the signal.  One turnout begins 78' west of the signal and is not powered.  Since the track from this turnout is located between the mainline and the signal, the 'doll' signal (small bracket signal) is placed along side the searchlights to indicate that they are for the 2nd track to the left of the signal (mainline).  The other turnout begins 16' east of the signal, is powered, and according to a note on the map, acts as a derail for the interlocking at Grand Crossing.

I ran across this photo on railpictures.net from

High quality photograph of Burlington Northern Railroad BN Hi-rail # at La Crosse, Wisconsin, USA.

Very interesting signal. Appears to be standard Q searchlight signal with the spiked filial and lower signal head for diverging. You can see the car is sitting at a switch. My first guess was that the switch is the connection from the Q to the MILW. But I also found the location of the signal interesting. It is up around the frog of the switch. The hyrail appears to be actually beyond the switch points. I would have thought the signal would be located before the switch points so there is no chance of a crew fouling the switch points. I have not had time to go back and search the track diagram for this interlocking, but my guess is that the signal protecting another switch just to left of the the photo, as well as the diamond. Is this the case?

Interesting view for the low location of the lower diverging signal head. Of course, most interesting is the second short mast. What is it for? Is that a small lunar signal mounted on it or something else?
