Per today's official State of Wisconsin foliage report (Oct 13) Crawford &  Grant Counties are at 30% reaching peak the 4th week of Oct and La Crosse Co. @ 60% with peak the 3rd week.  Most Burlington P.R. photos taken 'where nature smiles 300 miles' were taken from just north of Savanna, from Potosi to Wyalusing and from north of Prairie du Chien to La Crosse plus a few north @ Pepin.  Thus most areas will be at peak foliage when you follow the 'Great River Road".  Note: said "road" does NOT follow the river from E. Dbq to Prairie but state hwy's & county roads do (not too late to call Wis Tourism to get a good State road map - I have both but prefer the map to my On-Star & Tom-Tom)  So follow along on a good paved road from Potosi with its restored Potosi Brewery (also houses Nat. Brewerania Museum) which was a Q customer thru N of Cassville (historic Nelson Dewey State Park & historic "village" inc. depot & wood NP caboose. with great views from the park's bluffs).  See tow boats going thru the Locks & Dams, bald eagles circling, original Q concrete bridges, abandoned steel signal 'houses', State Fish Hatchery, markers from the Black Hawk War (1840's), old fishing villages, etc.  See exactly what sold people to try out those new-fangled vista-domes in "47!   If you start down at Savanna you can catch the soon to be replaced Sabula bridge which many a rail fan stood on to get pics of 4960 & 5632 passing under, Q depot @! former Savanna Ordinance Depot (& Alco switchers), the site of the Galena Jct depot (the Q branch is now a hiking trail with great photos at both ends showing depots @ the Jct & in Galena), the IC tunnel @ E. Dbq (1 of only 2 RR tunnels in IL, both used by the Q) the manned IC nee CN swing bridge to Dubuque (unfortunately CN has  recently torn down East Cabin & the depot), original restored CB&N depot & Q frt house @ Great River Museum (Smithsonian affiliate) in Dbq, etc.   Yes, the Q "lives" if you know where to look.....
