Thread-topic: [CBQ] Re: Intermountain F3 Issue

Somebody needs to look at the roster I downloaded from BRHS to make some corrections.

Nope, the F3s were renumbered.  F3 sets 137ABCD and 138 ABCD were broken up and renumbered 6/50 to 163C,B, 164B,C, 165C,B, and 166B,C.

F7As 163A - 166A were delivered 6/50 and then mated to the broken F3 sets to make four F7A/F3B/F3A sets numbered 163A,B,C to 166A,B,C.

Therefore, 166C was indeed an F3A, built as 138D in 10/48.

This is from the CB&Q roster in X2200S #29.

I checked the diesel roster in the in the files section and it says that 166 AC units were F7s, while the 166B unit was F3. Maybe the A units were rebuilt?

Nelson - If you enlarge the EMD badge plate beneath the cab, sure looks like "F3" to me. In any event, always a pleasure to share images with our Group. Best Regards - Louis

166C is an F7, not F3, so these are two late F7s, and the photo was taken in the 1960 in all probability. My layout cutoff is 1953. According to BB#4, some F3s were broken up and couples with F7s for an ABA set. There was no mention for how they used the other F3 A unit.

Thanks for the photo, always nice to add to the photo collection.

Nelson - Here is photographic proof that the Q did couple F3's in an A-A configuration. This inserted/attached image is unidentified as to location and is undated.

This is the only image I've ever seen of F3's coupled A-A style. So, such a configuration must've been a fairly rare event, but it did happen. Best Regards - Louis

Nelson,

Actually the Q ran ABA and ABBA sets of F's almost until the merger! For example, I just ran across this ABBA lashup in mid-1968: http://condrenrails.com/CB&Q/F7.html

There is a photo in Spoor's CB&Q Volume 2 page 68 of an F3A (124-D) F3B set sitting at Savanna in June 1966.

So, we do need B-units.

These are just the photos I have logged for the C&I, and I just ran across the ABBA going into Galesburg this week. It really caught my eye because it was an ABBA set and very late in the 60's.

I was just notified by my dealer that Intermountain canceled the B units of ABA and ABBA  F-3 sets without any previous notification to those who preordered. They will ship only A units beginning September 26. If you ordered sets with B units, and the Q only ran sets until around 1960 as far as I know, you may wish to cancel your orders. Otherwise, you’ll be left with a bunch of A units, and I don’t think I’ve ever seen a photo of two A units running back to back.

Extremely disappointed would be putting it mildly.
