Ah, the Iron Sponge mystery continues.
On my Rochelle map, there is a small spur that goes south to Caron Mills
(formerly the Vassar Swiss Underwear company.)
This is just west of the Standard Oil bulk tank facility on the east
side of town (by what would later become the Swift plant.) Just to the east of the Caron spur is a small
siding that goes to what the map calls the Iron Sponge Company. It’s not a large facility like Caron – a one
building factory – with a dock for receiving coal from the Q. I’ve been thinking about contacting the
Historical Society to see if anyone knows anything about it.

For Rich Gortowski---how far east of the depot was the spur for the iron sponge works on the 1941 map you have?
