Coincidently, just found this second road rage incident in
November 1888, 5 months after the previous incident. This was the year of the
Burlington engineers strike during which there were frequent reports of damage
to railroad equipment and threats to non-striking crews and newly recruited
replacements, as well as legal action against other railroads that refused to
accept CB&Q cars. This, in turn, led to friction between railroad employees
of different companies. However, there was nothing in either report to indicate
that the strike was a cause of the disturbances.
The crews of switching engines of the Michigan
Central, Rock Island and Northwestern roads indulged in a fight with the crew
of a Burlington switch engine, at Air Line Bridge, Sixteenth street, Chicago,
on Saturday night last, which culminated in a riot which lasted nearly an hour.
A number of men were badly bruised. The police were sent for but did not arrive
until after the yardmaster had restored order.
