Louis,
Look at the red in the herald on the tender...it is black. You right is is very difficult to tell from b&w photos.  Beautiful engine eh?

Hol and Group - It's always a little tricky in identifying the color red in black and white photographs. But, in the following attached image of a brand new 5626 taken at West Burlington, IA, Shops in April 1940, the cab roof certainly looks black to my eye. Perhaps, a later coat of red lead was applied over the base coat of black. 5626 looks nearly complete in this image missing only the contoured shield on the pilot deck that covered the feed water heater pump and the inspection plate or panel that covered the stoker engine on the tender at front bottom. 5626 and her Class O-5-A sisters, to me, represented the best in Q steam power. Best Regards - Louis

The Q was painting them red by the time the number on cab/herald on tender scheme was adopted in 1925, and the C&S and FW&D had followed suit by 1928 when they adopted the parent's scheme.  The color of the red lead was essentially the same as that of the mineral red paint used on freight cars.

When did the CB&Q, C&S and FW&D start painting the cab roofs of their steam engines with red lead? Was this the standard for all engines?

Apologies if this has been asked and answered, but a quick search of the archives didn't turn it up.

Jonathan
