A check of the Q diesel diagram book shows that all the GP40s -- 170-189 and 620-639 -- had the same 60:17 gearing.  Because the 600s weighed 1,613 pounds more than the earlier units (274,813 pounds vs. 273,200 pounds), they exerted a minimally greater starting tractive effort (68,703 pounds vs. 68,300).  The only real difference between the two groups was that the 600s had EMD's IDAC wheel slip system (Instantaneous Detection and Correction).

Besides having different end plates it was my understanding that the 100's and 600's were equipped with different gear ratios.  I may nave it backwards but I thought the 600's had 60:17 gears.
