First if anyone has not yet received your 2016 copy; I'm sorry but mine arrived
while I was out of town and since I'm on a rural route I suspect almost all
others have been received.
They just keep getting better ! Just want to say thanks to Marty Bernard,Paul
Lindauer and all the others involved in producing the 2016 BRHS Calendar. In my
34 years as a member this one is tops.
OK, I may be a bit biased since I live in Illinois and worked in all the
locations shown. But I also think it very appropriate, to once in awhile, focus
on the birthplace area of the Burlington and where over 25% of the BRHS
membership lives.
Some special page notes:
January- just this week I submitted an article entitled "For want of a nail".
It should answer all your Questions as to what, why, when, where about the
afternoon Zephyr wreck at Downers. I hope you'll enjoy it,whether it comes out
as a Zephyr piece or a Bulletin article. Hol Wagners and Bill Barbers photos
will really show the damage and cause.
February- the caption says "with a long string of general merchandise". But if
you look closely you'll see the Waycar marker about 8-10 cars back from the
units.
While none of us can say for sure this is most likely 73 to Galesburg or an
extra north. Either of which will get a "fill" at Eola.
Not nit picking, just trying to share the knowledge.
August- The Chicago terminal crews nicknamed the Baldwins the Queen Mary's for
all the stacks before they were modified.
September- Scary to think that 50 years after this photo I can identify the
industry that each car in the train came from with about 90% accuracy but can't
remember some of my current customers names !?
October- the track to the immediate left of the mains is the "old north main"
from pre-elevation days. Also note the "west sheds" that didn't remain much
longer. Also what was probably the Chicago and Aurora's original Montgomery
depot.the Qs cement post plant was immediately to the west and out of view from
the "depot". By the way I've learned, from a tidbit sent to me by the archives
committee, that originally the stock yards area was a gravel pit.
