Routing to and from Long Island could have been via Fresh Pond Junction and the New York Connecting Railroad:

David,

I cannot recall the book I found the photo in, but it was not mis-captioned. The photo was not of a Wichita to Seattle car but a Farmingdale, NY to Seattle car. Fairchild Hiller was located near Farmingdale, NY and built wing surfaces for the 747. I am not sure which way the cars were routed off of Long Island, but it was a regular route for the GN cars.

I ran across this photo of one of the GN Boeing cars on the LIRR and more info via a Google search:

Note that these cars covers are co-branded for the BOEING 747 and for Fairchild Hiller, so these were specific for the Farmingdale plant.

This might be an interesting cross-over question if there is a LIRR Yahoo group.

Republic Aviation was located in Farmingdale, and was active until 1965.  Grumman Aircraft Engineering, later Grumman Aerospace Corp., was located in Bethpage, just west of Farmingdale, and was active until 1994.  It was a Grumman LEM that landed on the moon in 1969.  Maybe the car was on Long Island for that purpose?

Tom-

Which railroad book were you looking at when you encountered this picture?

I am curious now as to why this car was in Long Island, NY in the first place. It seems that would be an awfully long way to be routed from Wichita to Seattle. Also, how would it get to Long Island? This car would be way too big to go through a railway tunnel under the Hudson River, and I doubt it would have gone on a car ferry.

A more likely scenario is that the photo was mis-captioned.
