Tim,
I think I may have confused the situation in my post, yesterday. The basic EMD application has two short exhaust stacks above the carbody roof, just as most models represent. As built, the EMD spark arrestor function is inside the carbody. There are four manifold sections, two with exhaust stacks and to without. Inside those manifolds is the EMD designed baffling intended for spark arresting. EMD did not apply external spark arrestors in production. All of the spark arrestor applications shown in the photos that I provided, yesterday, are aftermarket devices made by third parties and applied by the RR after delivery. There are also numerous photos of Q SD7s and SD9s with no spark arrestors. Nelson Moyer mentioned in his recent post that the spark arrestor application was more prevalent on Lines West units. Based on photographs, I think he is correct. BN applied spark arrestors to additional normally aspirated locomotives after the merger; some on units operating on former Q Lines East territory.

Gordon Smith's pointer to page 63, BB48, more clearly shows the exhaust stack look I am seeking which is about twice as tall as the molded one on the model. It is hard to see this feature with ground level photos, although I think if you see the stack in a typical roster shot looking up, it probably is taller than what the model has.
Bill Barber's comments that these were standard as delivered seems plausible for Burlington units, as several posters pointed to many other units with this item. Over time, presumably in the west, many units received flared spark arrestors, as visible in 5 of the 6 photos Bill attached to his posting.
After Gordon's comments, I am leaning towards scratch building. I was hoping somebody had a photo of the Custom Finishing part 247 as Walthers only has a very crude free-hand drawing that depicts the stack without a taper.
