The attached photo and the text below comes from the
Locomotive Firemen’s Magazine from 1910.
The model locomotive, illustration of which is here shown, was constructed by Bro.
W. A. Bell, of Lodge 629, Deadwood, South Dakota, who states that the time
required in building it was thirty days, working ten hours per day. It was modeled
after a passenger locomotive in use on the Black Hills division of the C B.
& Q. R. It. The material used in its construction was wood, and it was built
to a scale of one inch to the foot, the principal tools being a jack-knife, saw
and hammer. The total length of engine and tender is 5 feet; height from rail
to top of smokestack, 17 inches; diameter of driving wheels, 51 inches.
Perhaps a new category for the Annual Meet Model Contest – wooden locomotives,
hand tools only?
