Rupert - Perhaps, the idea that the Q had some box cars painted black in
the early 1900s came from photographs taken at the time that showed some cars
painted a very "dark"color. I've attached an image of such a box car 101417
built in 1907 by the Standard Steel Car Company of Butler, PA. I don't
think this particular car is painted back, but could be a dark mineral red. Just
an idea.... Granted, it's all but impossible to judge true paint colors
from a black and white photograph. Best Regards - Louis
