As I recall, spark arresters were required in Nebraska by state law. They were common on Lines West, but not so much on Lines East. Somebody with a better memory might wish to weigh in on this.

Tim,

One of the photos that I sent you was taken in Cicero IL - 03/23/70 and it has no spark arrestors on it, so if you are modeling 1969 your SD7 would have no spark arrestors. Those spark arrestors were most likely put on by the BN.

It appears what you're looking at is a locomotive spark arrestors on it. Details West has the part as #123, and I believe Details Associates also has the same type.  John

Hi Tim,

I found two photos of #315 on the web but don't see anything odd about the stacks

Hope these photos help with your project.

Subject: [CBQ] SD 7 Exhaust Stack

I am detailing an old Proto 2000 SD7 for CB&Q in 1969 and the unit I am doing (#315) appears to have exhaust stacks taller than what is on the model. The stacks appear about twice as tall as the stock one, with a slight inward taper towards the top. A photo of BNSF 6132 in BB48, page 85 is the best photo I have come across that shows this stack.

Is there a commercially available part for this? What have others done to model this?

Thanks, Tim Wells
