Hi Norm,

Thanks for the clarification.

You had me wondering after you mentioned that on the GN list, hence why I asked Mr. Extra what he had heard when a similar topic came up here, since he has more knowledge of this piece of railroad than anyone else I know.

I must be on moderated status on the GN list because I see the long post I wrote this morning still hasn't posted.

Take care,

I've been questioned about the Custer connection.  Checking Richard C. Overton's Burlington Route, page 229, the connection was established at  Huntley on 28 Oct 1894.  So I was misinformed.  Norm

That was the original line from Sheridan to a connection with the NP near Custer MT.  It was severed from the NP but served as a beet spur for years, after the new connection at Huntley entered service.  Norm Metcalf, Boulder Colorado

Mr. Extra,

I wondered about east bound helpers to Parkman in the steam era. The Steinheimer photo shows a double header going east, but I assume the second engine was dropped off at Parkman. Do you think this would have been put on at Hardin?

Do you know if the North Line to the sugar factory in Hardin was built to connect the plant to the main or if it had an earlier purpose? Was the sugar factory the only industry on it?

Take care,

Between Sheridan, WY and Hardin MT there were wyes at Parkman (MP724), Wyola (MP 736), Lodge Grass (MP 754), and "Area Wye" (MP 782) just east of the Big Horn River at Hardin. The Area Wye at Hardin was torn out when I-90 was finished thru there and the state replaced it by adding a new east leg at the Hardin North Line "junction"  in Hardin about 1.5 miles west of the old wye. All were for steam helpers that went various distances down the Little Big Horn River to get on eastbound trains and for turning the power on Fall sugar beet runs.

East of Sheridan to Gillette there were wyes at least at Ulm, Arvada, Sparta, and Gillette.
