Thanks to all who provided some very helpful information on ballast and ash pits. I’ll get the Steam Locomotive Service Drawings Part One if it’s still available, and I have downloaded the reference supplied by Rupert. The photos were extremely helpful, especially the close-up slag photo with the ruler scale.

 

I was born in Florida, lived in Alaska from 1953-1959, then returned to Florida. I never saw any CB&Q trains or facilities, so I’m totally dependent upon people and books for modeling information. By the time I moved to Iowa in 1982, the Q was gone. I didn’t start modeling until I retired in 2008, so by that time, most of the facilities were gone as well.
