Doug, you brought a story to mind.

One night we arrive at Aurora on the last leg of a dinky. As I walk through the train I notice a bakery box left on the overhead luggage rack. The lost item rule stated perishable would not be retained and sent to lost and found in C.U.S. I took the box with me into the crew callers office in the depot.
Upon opening we found  a nice cake which she and I split. As I walking out of the office the passenger who left the box came in looking for it. He wasn't happy with our splitting it. We explained the lost and found rule. We offered to give him the two halves but he stormed off.

Never heard a word about it.

Also ydmstrs. Were well taken care of by train crews. Talk about someone who could make your life miserable !

The crew clerk was kind of like the First Sargent in the Military..He or she wasn't of high rank, but your example shows how much power someone in that position could hold...You better stay on his/her good side...There were lots of ways you could be "stabbed" and never know it.

BTW...there was a woman crew caller at Lincoln in the 50's who was, shall we say,  "rough and tough"...with a very deep voice...Guess how she answered the phone....You guessed it...or maybe you didn't....She identified herself when answering as  "Call GIRL"

Pete

Oh Pete the memories your two days off comment brought to mind. And your right on about the old mgmt style. I told John about my first and only encounter with EHH at the spring meet. I can't retell it here. Let's just say it was along the lines about the old mgmt style you discussed.

As to days off it worked the same for the rank and file. DDF was a drone brkmn with quite a bit of whiskers. He was always on the highest paying job on the division he could hold and he NEVER laid off. He was working the Congress Park job which was 7 days a week,365 days a year and pretty much came in just under the hog law each night. One Christmas Eve DDF phones up the crew caller at Aurora and says mark me off tonight. The crew caller says sorry Dallas the TM has a no layoff edict out. When she hung up she told the usual group hanging around the office "that SOB hasn't laid off all year when the extra list could have used some work, serves him right".
