Hol and group, I have a series of photos from this derailment as well
as the crew involved and other interesting details such as how the
claim agent came down from Burlington with a pocket full of $50 bills
and settled every claim. Workmen were driving piling on top the bluff
behind the home of the owner of the Schaeffer Pen Co. This started a
slide which swept the locomotive into the river. It was the 2937 and
the fireboy popped out first and pulled himself up on the shore. He
stood there and watched the bubbles coming out of the cab and was
heard to exclaim, " Am I going to have to go back in the water and
pull that SOB out?" About that time the engineer popped to the
surface and waded ashore. $50 was a lot of money in 1935. Archie
