I am building an O-Scale two rail model of "Q" GP-7.  "Q" GP-7 #209  was high on my priority list to model as it served on the Aurora Division in 1954 as did several other GP-7's.  (ref: Mike Spoor Vol. I, CB&Q In Color p 7.)  I recalled seeing a photo of "Q" GP-7 in a Zephyr and as I recalled there was something unique about that photo. I pulled my copy of Zephyr #47, 2/03  to look at the photo again.  It was a photo of "Q" GP-7 #209.

Yes, GP #209 did have a unique feature in that June, 1952 photo that doesn't appear in later photos I've found on-line of #209.  The unique feature of #209 involved a piece of conduit running along the fireman's side of the short end cab roof that lead to a speaker mounted on the nose of the unit  (refer to the photo on p. 8 in the "Q and A Section" of Zephyr #47 )  The photo caption says it is a waterproof and shockproof speaker developed by Operadio Co/DuKane.  The speaker had been developed and patented by Phil Weibler's father during WWII for the Navy.  After WWII the company was looking for a new application of the speaker system and their product developed into the "talk back radio" for communications between the yardmaster, the switch crew and other yard personnel.

I have three questions about the system.   I am hoping that a CB&Q member can help me answer them.
  • When did the speaker system first appear on #209 or any other GP for that matter?
  • How long did the system remain in use?
  • Did any other units assigned to the Aurora Division get outfitted with a similar speaker system?
Thanks,  Dave Sarther    Tucson, AZ
