I hadn't seen this photo either, and it is a great shot. You can almost hear that bell ringing. But are we sure this is an outbound train? It looks to me as though No. 70 may be running in reverse. I don't think you can be certain looking at the flagman; he may just be turning to watch the engine as it passes. Also, the engineer is facing back. Perhaps they're obscured in this view, but I don't see any classification lights either, which would indicate this is a train. C&S 70 wasn't just the main road engine for Clear Creek branches during the 1930s; it was the designated yard switcher in Denver, wasn't it? just as No. 60 was the Leadville switcher. Could it have been shunting a cut of cars in this photo, or running light to pick up some? It shows the 70 with a Clear Creek District freight having come from the C&S Seventh Street yard (which ran as far northeast as 14th St.) and about to cross 19th St., with the crossing watchman out flagging the crossing. The train will continue northeast beneath the 20th St. viaduct (a truss span of which is visible in the distance), cross the South Platte River and turn north at Prospect Jct. for a run of about two miles up to Clear Creek Jct., where it will turn west and head for Golden and the line up Clear Creek Canyon to Idaho Springs and Georgetown.
