I'm attaching an action view of Q 2222 with a local down from Teague as it reached Belt Jct. on the northern outskirts of Houston (It sure doesn't look that that today!) and will complete its run on Houston Belt & Terminal trackage. On to the Pacifics leased by the Q to its subsidiaries. As I mentioned earlier, the passenger service between Denver and Billings was operated jointly by the Q and C&S under an agreement signed in 1918 that provided for pooled motive power and cars. Locomotives initially were changed out at Casper, but in later years they ran all the way through. Again, oil-burners were used exclusively on this run, though the C&S still employed a mix of oil- and coal-burners on its Northern and Wyoming divisions -- but on the passenger trains it was strictly oil-burners, as there were no coaling facilities on the Casper Division (Casper, Bonneville and Greybull being the locations of roundhouses and servicing facilities) after about 1930. S-2-A (and C&S F-3A) and S-3 (and C&S F-3B and C) Pacifics were the primary power on these trains, with the lighter ones most commonly used. Thus the attached view of Q 2932 on No. 30 approaching Denver in 1932 is typical, but does not represent a leased locomotive. The 2932, however, would be leased to the FW&D for over a year in 1940-41. Two other S-2-A's regularly used in Denver-Billings service were earlier leased to the FW&D between 1929 and 1932: the 2900 and 2911. Since FW&D passenger power frequently ran through to Denver, finding one of these leased Pacifics at the C&S Seventh Street engine terminal in Denver would not be the least bit unusual, whether it was the power for trains 29-30 to the north or trains 1-2 or 7-8 to the south. The attached shot of 2911 at Seventh Street in 1930 was made a year before the engine was leased to the FW&D, so it's the power for 29-30 that day. More in a day or two. Hol
