There is an old saying, out here in the country: "Treated like a borrowed mule"! That pretty much sums up the way rented equipment gets treated.

Tim/Noel - Victory in Japan Day (close of World War Two) was August 14,1945. According to the Corbin book, disposition dates for the three Q locomotives leased to the SP were:

No. 1955  May 1948

No. 1907  December 1946

No. 2974  August 1951

So, drawn your own conclusions. I, too, have heard the story that all three locomotives were mechanical "basket cases" when returned from the SP. True or not, I do not know. I vaguely recall that this topic may've been discussed within the Group some time earlier. Best Regards - Louis

Tim,
I know..lets say in good serviceable condition. A steam engine if properly maintained and cared for can last many years. Like your grandfathers ax. Six new handles and two new heads, but still you grandfathers ax.

Any report of a 37 year old steam locomotive in "prime condition" has to
be taken with a grain (or a whole teaspoon) of salt... :-)

I read somewhere (wish I could remember where..brain getting old) that when the Q leased these engines to SP they were in prime condition. When the SP returned them, they were pretty much scrap material.

Wow, that's fantastic! I'd never heard of these locos leased to the SP before
you guys mentioned it. Beautiful photo.
