While in theory it could have been used in passenger service, it was not but served as a temporary stationary boiler when the permanent boiler at a location was being repaired or replaced.  It was retired when the railroad found it really had very infrequent use for it and could more readily use the two Vapor Clarkson steam boilers it carried as extras for diesel locomotives, reverting to the use of steam locomotives as temporary stationary boilers.  The last such use of a steam locomotive was in 1959 when O-5-B 5629 was so used at Lincoln while the depot heating plant there was being replaced.

Does anyone have information about boiler car # 251500? I have a roster picture of it, furnished by Charlie Vlk, but does anyone have a picture of it in service? Was it strictly an emergency portable boiler or was it used in passenger train service? It had steam conduits on both ends, diaphragms and Allied Full Cushion trucks so it could have used in passenger train service.
