I see a lot of images being shared on the yahoo digests I read and have some thoughts.

The theory behind scanning photos is to derive an image file with the most scan data possible. Many factors can affect the final image. Resolution, enlargement, color space, sharpening and the file format the image is saved in.

Color Space
When you scan your images use Adobe RGB 1998 as your color space instead of sRGB, the 'watered down' version of RGB designed for web use. sRGB has less color scan data than RGB. sRGB is for web only images. And when sRGB is used with a .JPG file saving format, every time you open and close the image, even more color scan data is lost. Using sRGB just compounds the .JPG problem.

.JPG's
Every time a .jpg image is opened, saved or manipulated it loses detail. Most everyone saves images as a .JPG to save hard drive space. If you really want to create an image archive use the TIFF format. TIFF is a lossless format. Yes, it will take more disk space. Saving TIFF's = more money for hard disk storage space. That's better than trying to recreate what is lost.

Sharpening
Don't over sharpen your images. There is no way back from this abuse.

Naming Your File and Banning Use of Any Symbol Above a Number or Split Use Key Along with Commas, Periods
Boolean search rules don't apply to naming your scanned image files. Your computer can search your files for any search criteria you provide. It does not need to have the + sign or other symbols included between each word. All the search engine needs to be most effective is a space between the words.

If you use any symbol above a number on your keyboard or a <  >  :  ;  ' " [  ] { } \  |  ? +  = or comma,  you risk not being able to open the file in the future. Especially cross platform, eg PC to Mac or Mac to PC. Sometimes changing the image file name will salvage being able to open the image. My experience is this works less than 10% of the time especially if the image is sent over the internet. Then it drops to 1%.

If you feel the need to fill the spaces within a file name use_the_underscore-or-hyphen-to-do-it. They are harmless.

Never start a file with a   space, hyphen - or underscore _ .

Trimming Posts
It's great everyone shares. But seeing who can be first to reply with the last 3 days' of messages and anecdotes within their reply along with image data makes for very unpleasant experiences for the Daily Digest readers. Other yahoo groups BAN people that can't follow this guideline.

Be Courteous. Trim your darn posts! If you see this mess tailgating your response to a post, please trim it off.

Regards,

Randy Danniel
