Group - Continuing along, here are two more images of CB&Q Class D
2-8-0 locomotives:
Early in its life, CB&Q Class D-4-A No. 3116 immigrated from the
H&StJ to Lines West. Here it is at Englewood, SD, in an undated view. Note
the diamond stack for burning lignite coal. In the previous image showing
3116 awaiting scrapping at Eola, note the locomotive retained its two foot smoke
box extension, but by then had been equipped with a straight stack.
This image of CB&Q Class D-4-A No. 3111, also originally built for the
H&StJ, has always puzzled me. Why the freshly painted "black" smoke box
while the rest of the locomotive looks weather worn? Could 3111 have just had a
L&B front end installed? This image was taken at Omaha, NE, in 1932.
More D-Bill images coming tomorrow. Best Regards - Louis
