I haven't compared firebox dimensions of the 530 with various Q engines, but finding lignite grates that fit the 530 could have been a bit problematic.  But your theory makes perfect sense, assuming lignite grates were installed.

Hol -

You said in an earlier posting that the C&S never used lignite for engine fuel, except perhaps in an emergency. Looking at the 1935 list of assignments, I see that practically all steam engines on the Alliance Division burned either lignite or oil, so presumably 530's conversion from bituminous to lignite must have been one of those change-the-grate-inside-the-smokebox modifications after it arrived. And since lignite was standard coal in that division, perhaps they saw no urgency about noting that on a leased engine which never would venture far from the yard.

I just checked the Otto Perry photos at the Denver Public Library and found two shots of C&S 530 on the Alliance Division, one at Alliance on May 31, 1937, and one at Edgemont in the snow on March 29, 1936.  And though the assignment sheets all show the engine as a lignite burner, there is no yellow square on the tender in either view.
