I'm guessing that the Edgemont-Deadwood branch's 3% grades were what made this run impossible for the K-2's and K-10's hauling 2-3 heavyweight passenger cars. A few of the light K-2's lasted past World War II, and the 1952 list of assignments shows three of them surviving on the Creston Division, where I imagine they occasionally must have been called upon to haul trains that heavy on a fairly flat branch line. When the Q began using all-steel coaches on trains 141-142 between Edgemont and Deadwood, the train became a little heavy for the K-2 and K-10 Ten-Wheelers previously used -- especially in the summer months when the heavyweight Pullman was added to the consist.
